An amazing day saw the Netherlands crowned World Cup Champions. They saw off all the competition to make it to the final where they met Argentina. Both teams played some amazing football throughout the tournament setting up an extraordinary final. Some stand out players displayed their skills, here is the road to the final. Argentina vs Netherlands.
The scene was set on the biggest stage in the world. This final proved to be extra special as there was the added benefit of a final which included the two best teams in the competition. Ross Cable captaining an Argentina side whose seductive style of play saw them shrug off big names such as France Germany and Italy. This was also topped off with the fact that they had not conceded a single goal throughout the competition. One touch passing and a knack for delivering the perfect final ball meant they easily earned their place in the final.
Netherlands whose entertaining style of play acquired a key ingredient, the killer edge! Seeing off their competition comfortably they boasted an immaculate defence and good fire power. Only conceding one goal during the group stages. Opinions in the stadium were divided with pundits and fans backing both sides for world cup glory.
Both teams made their way out of the tunnel poised for success. The game was officiated by Sasha who proved to be the most consistent referee and rated number 1 in the world before the competition. It was a cagey start as neither team really took the game by the scruff of the neck. After the first few minutes the match started to open up. First blood went to Netherlands though, the referee decided no let play continue when a foul on Greg Sherman (Argentina) Ashley Robinson broke down the left wing and played a pass across to a waiting Daniel Johnson who slotted the ball home with a cool placed left foot shot.
The restart saw a more open Netherlands team who had the better possession and created a gulf of chances however were unable to capitalise. Argentina were not out of the game, they created some good chances and had the better passing moves. The referee ended the first half festivities with Netherlands being 1-0 in front.
The second half started with all to play for and £1000 still up for grabs. Both teams upped their game and it lead to a dynamite second half. Again Netherlands had the better of possession and the better attempts however it was still a close contest . A dubious referee decision gifted Argentina a penalty in the 25th minute which Ben put to the left of the keeper.
With the game level hope resided in the Argentine camp as they pushed forward to take the lead. Hastily they conceded a free-kick deep in their half some quick thinking released Marcus (Netherlands) who blasted the ball from distance although the keeper should have done better the Netherlands regained the lead taking the score to 2-1. Argentina pressed hard to find the equaliser and in their efforts found the breakthrough a long range effort from George Bennet brought his tally up to 9 for the tournament and secured himself as top scorer. 2-2 the score and things were really heating up.
The game was far from over and the victor was yet to be decided not by skill but by hunger and desire. This Netherlands had in abundance. Another finely worked move led to their 3rd goal again scored by Daniel Johnson. A bit of genius followed Marcus Robinson putting the ball through the legs of Shane Staff of Argentina before laying off the ball to Johnson for his hatrick he feinted the chip committing the keeper to dive before chipping the ball which went agonisingly wide.
The match was still on a knife edge with Argentina pegging the Dutch back twice however they put the game to bed in the 38 minute through Billy crooks who completed the victory after yet another assist from Ashley Robinson. Jubilation at the final whistle Netherlands Crowned World Cup Champions!!!
